Cross Fit....will I ever JUMP IN???

I'm very intrigued by Crossfit and would love to join them in the ranks of the athletes they have there.

I would LOVE to construct a workout area like theirs in my barn! Click on "Cross Fit..." in the title and be directed to their homepage! Check it out.

JUMP ON IN! TAKE A SWIM! YOU'LL NEVER WANT TO COME OUT OF THE POOL!

Mr.Mirek,
Thank you for the words of encouragment! How long have you been Crossfitting? I'm starting plans of turning a section in our Barn...into a little Crossfit area. What equipment do you suggest starting with first? Bumperplates, dumbbells, bar, box, squatting rack, bench?

Hi Gabrielle,
Metric on blogspot as well as the BrandX forums.
Thinking about what I have at home, add rings, medicine ball(s) and a pull-up bar and you've got all you need for almost all the CF workouts.
Sub d.bell swings for k.bell swings and you don't need kettlebels

You can make your own rings in a variety of ways, but the bought version are better.
Medicine balls are dead easy to make yourself from basket balls. I can point you to the pages that give what I've found to be the best instructions.
The CF journal has an article on setting up a garage gym. It's been released to free access and is available here http://www.crossfit.com/journal/2006/08/the_garage_gym_sept_02_cfj.html
Email me at metric.nz at gmail.com or PM "Metric" on the BrandX forum if blogger mangles that.

You only rarely need a bench for CF, I think there are two named WODS that have you benching? As a competitive body builder you may find it useful, but if your goal is CF, you can just use your plyo boxes to sit on.

A guy in San Diego is making plyo box kitsets that I would really recommend, although if hubby can lay hardwood floors as nicely as that, making angled boxes will probably be a piece of cake. If he's busy, he might appreciate having someone else do al the measuring and cutting for him anyway. Your call.
Kitsets are here:

Instructions and dimensions for angled plyo boxes are here:
http://www.crossfit.com/journal/2007/06/plyo_boxes_by_lincoln_brigham_1.html

Angled boxes are worth the hassle, square boxes leave nasty scars on your shins when you miss the jump.

Again, email me at the address above or PM "Metric" on the BrandX forum if the links get mangled.

Craig, You are awesome for leaving such good advice. I was just searching Crossfit and BrandX...to find more info. on basic equipment and getting started ~ then I saw your post! I'd really LOVE a rower!!! Do you have one?? Yep...you are right about my hubby being busy, I may just go with your suggestion on the kit! I'm excited!!

Damn. Sorry, forgot the rower.

Yes, I have one. But, and this is really frustrating me immensely, it doesn't measure distance! I got it secondhand and cheap. It's a lovely rower, but the computer on it is a cheapy and is quite frankly useless for CF. So I have to work out how long it should take me to row 400m and row for that long when a WOD calls for rowing. I'm taking too long sometimes and not allowing enough time on others.

It boils down to: Get a Concept 2 rower.
They're the only ones that properly measure distance and calories (the two measures CF uses) and you can row on 3 different C2 rowers and know that the numbers you're getting will be consistent. They cost a lot, so I'd look for secondhand. In fact I'd look for secondhand gear for all of what you're after. The deals that come up on Craigslist make me insanely jealous of you all up there in the states. Be patient, watch carefully and you'll get equipment at good prices.

I'm a geek, so I'm looking at building my own computer to measure distance properly on my rower. It will be cheaper than buying a C2, even secondhand and for a geek, it's fun. :-)

Take a look at these links for equipment on the cheap:

Home made medicine balls
I'd recommend this method.
http://www.board.crossfit.com/showthread.php?t=25440

This is how I did it and it works, but the idea of removing the air-plug to fill them with sand is brilliant! Much better than making holes in the ball.

Homemade wooden rings.
Haven't tried this.

The method I used for PVC rings

The pre-bent pvc pipe is probably better, you don't actually need a full circle.

Kempie (from the BrandX forums and CF Northeast England) came up with a genius level way to improvise a GHD from a plyo box.

I am on vacation in Mazatlan and wondering if there is a Crossfit gym here that I could maybe buy a t-shirt from? I am located at the Pueblo Bonito Mazatlan Hotel and wondering if anyone can tell me.
Thanks, Kim Denham Mount Vernon, Washington.

Kim, Hi ~ I DOUBT you will find a Cross Fit gym in Mazatlan. We normally stay at El Moro Towers, there is a "primitive gym" fairly close by ~ I forgot the name, something with "Gold" in it...lol. El Moro Towers does have a gym across the street that you can purchase a week there. A fair amount of dumbbells, a couple cable machines, maybe two treadmills. My husband and I WALKED from El Moro Towers to the lighthouse "El Faro"....it's approximately 14 miles maybe more. We walked on the beach to The Sheik Restaurant, then from there took the sidewalk, winding and inclining all the way. Then made our way up to the "hill" of the lighthouse and to the top for a great view. There are several statues reflecting the qualities of Mazatlan along the way. Have fun! And eat at Pedro and Lola's in the Old Mazatlan by the Angela Peralta Theatre!!!
